The Mayor of Havering, Councillor Maggie Themistocli, has raised The Red Ensign flag to mark Merchant Navy Day (3 September). The ceremony with borough representatives took place at Havering Town Hall, Romford, and paid tribute to merchant navy personnel, veterans, cadet forces and their families. Merchant Navy Day also recognises the ongoing support provided by The Seafarers’ Charity to those who work, or have worked, at sea. Merchant seafarers continue to underpin the UK economy, transporting around 95% of the nation’s traded goods while working in often challenging conditions. #MerchantNavyDay
